Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, Glasgow
Designed for the 1901 Exhibition by architects John Simpson and E.J. Milner, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum opened in 1902. The recent 3-year refurbishment programme was aimed at bringing the 'A' listed building into the 21st century. Building Design Partnership were the Architects on the project and the main contractor was HBG Construction. JCC were amongst the many companies involved in the restoration, responsible in main for the internal joiner work package.
The main entrance doors were carefully removed by our joiners and brought back to our workshop where our team used their skills to produce an exact replica of the original external doors. Various internal doors were also reproduced to match the existing doors.
JCC carried out work to the roof area at the high ornate pavilions. These were found to be leaning slightly and structurally unstable. The towers were made safe by wiring and bracing them from the inside which involved the internal joinery work having to be fully stripped to allow the wiring to be fitted and JCC carried out reinstatement work and reproduced mouldings in our workshop to exactly replicate the originals. This work was done from photography, records, etc.
Sir Roger the Asian elephant, one of Kelvingroves oldest and most loved exhibits was too fragile to be relocated during the refurbishment work and JCC built protective hoarding around him allowing careful monitoring and control of the humidity levels whilst the refurbishment work was ongoing.
